Flag Chart Formation Definition
A flag chart formation occurs after a security experiences an impulsive up or down move. After such a strong run-up, the security will take a "breather" before continuing in the direction of the primary trend.

When a stock has a strong run up over a short period of time, where it gains 30% or 40% or more, there is a tendency for either a correction or a continued advance with even larger gains expected.

Flag
The Flag pattern usually occurs after a significant up or down market move. After a strong move, prices usually need to rest. This resting period usually occurs in the shape of a rectangle, thus the word "flag".

Bear flag, bull flag, bearish pennant and bullish pennant chart patterns represent brief pauses after sharp moves in a dynamic market. They are considered as most reliable continuation patterns.

The Flag Pattern
Flags can be categorised as a continuation pattern. They represent a brief pause and are seen right after a big move. The price action continues in the same direction after the pause.

A Flag (Bearish) follows a steep or nearly vertical decline in price, and consists of two parallel trendlines that form a rectangular flag shape.

A flag in an uptrend will form when the prevailing trend temporarily gives way to supply causing the movement upwards to halt.

Pennant A continuation chart pattern that is simliar to the flag, except that it is more horizontal and resembles a small symmetrical triangle.
