Lagging Indicators
Lagging indicators generally have a delay or lag behind the current price action and provide useful information as to where the market has been, rather than predictive information about the future.
Leading Indicator
Economic figure that tends to rise or fall ahead of changes in the overall economic cycle and that is therefore considered a proxy for changes in overall economic output and activity.
Lagging Indicators are good in showing the trends that have developed, but are not good in predicting future price movement.

So how do we spot a trend?
The indicators that can do so have already been identified as MACD and moving averages.
Leading Indicators - Economic variables that are considered to predict future economic activity (i.e. Unemployment, Consumer Price Index, Producer Price Index, Retail Sales, Personal Income, Prime Rate, Discount Rate, and Federal Funds Rate).
The STIX indicator is yet another short term oscillator that compares the volume flowing into advancing and declining stocks. STIX trading ranges generally stay between +42 and +58, meaning that the indicator does not generate signals very often.
