Direction
During any given time-frame a market can do one of three things : go up, go down, move sideways. Persistent moves in the same direction are generally referred-to as "Trends".

Rate of Change (ROC) vs the "Momentum" Indicator
There is another popular indicator called "Momentum" that is almost identical to the Rate of Change indicator.

Momentum indicators can display oversold and overbought levels, but there are no limits on the values of the indicator. Hence, if a market is trending hard in one direction, the indicator will go as far as the market is willing to take it.

Momentum is identical to the Rate of Change indicator with the only difference in units - momentum is measured in price points whereas ROC is measured in percent.

Earnings Momentum
A corporation's earnings per share that continuously increases from one period to another. The usual effect is that a stock's price will rise.

OBV is a momentum indicator, it shows if volume is flowing into or out of a security. OBV usually changes precede price changes.

TRIX is a momentum indicator that displays the percent rate-of-change of a triple exponentially smoothed moving average of the security's closing price. It is designed to keep you in trends equal to or shorter than the number of periods you specify.

RSI measures the momentum of price movements. It is also plotted on a scale ranging from 0 to 100.

Rate-of-change (percent) A momentum oscillator that measures the percent change in price from one period to the next. The plot forms an oscillator that fluctuates above and below the zero line as the rate-of-change moves from positive to negative.
