Nasdaq Composite:
The Nasdaq composite index consists of all of the roughly 5,000 stocks on the Nasdaq exchange. Stock prices are weighted by market capitalization, as in the S&P 500.

What are those mysterious numbers called the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the S&P 500 and the NASDAQ Composite Index that are always reported on the evening news?

In the US there are three major indices: The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA), the Standard and Poor’s 500 (S&P 500) and the NASDAQ Composite. These are now very familiar terms to us. What exactly is an index?
