Negative Volume Index (NVI)
Used together with the Positive Volume Index, it can identify bull markets. These indicators are created on the notion that smart money dominates trading on quiet days.

 


Negative Volume Index (NVI) attempts to identify bull markets by showing what the smart investors are doing. It is based on the assumption smart investors dominate trading on light volume days and uninformed investors dominates trading on active days.

The Negative Volume Index was introduced (in Stock Market Logic) by Norman Fosback and is often used in conjunction with Positive Volume Index to identify bull markets.

The Negative Volume Index was introduced by Norman Fosback in his 1976 book, Stock Market Logic. Along with the Positive Volume Index, this indicator seeks to indentify bull and bear markets.

NEGATIVE VOLUME INDEX
Overview
The Negative Volume Index ("NVI") focuses on days where the volume decreases from the previous day. The premise being that the "smart money" takes positions on days when volume decreases.

Calculation:
If current candle's volume is lower than previous candle's, add NVI*(C-PC)/PC (C=current close, PC=previous close, NVI=previous Negative Volume Index).
