Nominal yield

Nominal yield or coupon yield is the coupon rate of a fixed income security, which is a fixed percentage of the par value. Unlike current yield, it does not vary with the market price of the security.

If you had a bond that carried a nominal yield of 6%, but inflation was at an annual rate of 5%, the bond's real yield would be 1%.

That's a huge difference so always remember to distinguish between the two.

Coupon Yield
A bond's coupon payment divided by par value. Also called nominal yield.
