OBV is calculated as the continuous consecutive sum of volumes, whereby the entire volume of a day is added to the volume of the previous trading session's OBV, if today's closing price is above that of the previous session.

OBV - On Balanced Volume
On Balance Volume can be used to either confirm the current price trend or warn of a possible reversal. It is the trend of the OBV line that is important, not the actual numbers themselves.

OBV is a momentum indicator, it shows if volume is flowing into or out of a security. OBV usually changes precede price changes.

On Balance volume (OBV) can give an indication of the health of a price trend. Rising OBV during a period of rising prices is bullish. Falling OBV during a period of falling prices is bearish.

On Balance Volume (OBV): This indicator is used to identify and confirm trends in a stock price. On Balance Volume creates a fluctuating line shown in the lower pane of the chart. Day one of the chart starts at zero.

On Balanced Volume (OBV) - Used to observe a change in trading volume for n-periods earlier. The OBV is a part of the technical query criteria. When selected from the Technical Screen, TPSTM will select stocks with an increase in trading volume.

By showing the direction of volume flow, the CVI is very similar to OBV. The difference between the two indicators is in the actual methods of calculation.

The short term trend, based on a 5 bar moving average, is DOWN. A 5 bar new low here was confirmed by a 5 bar new low for OBV. Since no divergence exists, OBV is neutral.

Misc. indicators: There are also several other market strength indicators available such as the OBV, Ease of Movement, Chaikin Oscillator, MFI, and also different volume indicators.

As one of the first technical indicators to measure positive and negative volume flow (i.e. the buying and selling pressure), the OBV is used to predict price movements, or to confirm price trends.
