One of the most memorable embargoes was the oil embargo imposed by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) in the early 1970s to protest U.S. policies toward Israel.

Once the reaction to $40 plus a barrel crude oil prices was addressed by the OPEC oil ministers, crude oil prices started dropping rapidly. The initial targets for adding new supply to the markets is in the low $30's per barrel.

OPEC had started flexing its muscles, causing oil to quadruple. This resulted in a long recession, with inflation spiking to 12.3% in 1974, while real GDP growth fell by 0.5%.

After the collapse of the OPEC-administered pricing system in 1985, and a short lived experiment with netback pricing, oil-exporting countries adopted a market-linked pricing mechanism.

Another well known example of an international cartel is the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), which has controlled oil prices since the 1960s.

The principal factor was the fourfold increase in oil prices imposed by OPEC in 1973, which raised prices throughout the economy while slowing economic growth.
