Over-the-counter (OTC) trading is to trade financial instruments such as stocks, bonds, or derivatives directly between two parties. It is the opposite of exchange trading which occurs on futures exchanges or stock exchanges.

 


Over-the-counter stock (OTC stock) Stock that is not listed on a federally-regulated exchange. These stocks are traded through a loose network of brokers, usually by telephone or electronic connection.

Over-the-counter option: An over-the-counter option is one which is traded in the over-the-counter market. OTC options are not listed on an options exchange and do not have standardized terms.
