A basic principle of technical analysis is that security prices move in trends. We also know that trends do not last forever. They eventually change direction and when they do, they rarely do so on a dime.

A long white day in an uptrend is followed by a relatively small black day that gaps in the direction of the trend.

The pattern appears during an uptrend, which is further confirmed by the first long white candlestick. Prices open with a gap next day and they trade within a narrow range closing at a slightly lower level.

This pattern requires confirmation and this confirmation can occur in the form of a large gap up or a higher close, or in the form of a white candlestick.

Trading patterns are identified in real time and can often be indicators of an overall market shift. The adage, 'It's a psychological market,' is a specific reference to trading patterns, or fluctuations that are often caused by public mood.
