Positive volume index (PVI)
"Index of positive volume" indicator (PVI) changes on the periods in which value of volume has increased in comparison with the previous period.

 


The Positive Volume Index (PVI) attempts to identify bull markets. The PVI shows what the uninformed investors are doing, while the Negative Volume Index shows what the smart investors are doing.

The Positive Volume Index (or PVI) by Norman Fosback, is based on the idea that on days when volume increases, the unsophisticated "crowd" have joined in, and a trend may become more marked.

The Positive Volume Index was introduced (in Stock Market Logic) by Norman Fosback and is often used in conjunction with Negative Volume Index to identify bull and bear markets.

POSITIVE VOLUME INDEX
Overview
The Positive Volume Index ("PVI") focuses on days where the volume increased from the previous day. The premise being that the "crowd" takes positions on days when volume increases.

Positive Volume Index
Calculation:
If current candle's volume is higher than previous candle's, add PVI*(C-PC)/PC (C=current close, PC=previous close, PVI=previous Positive Volume Index).
