REIT stands for Real Estate Investment Trust. A REIT is a company that owns and usually manages income-producing real estate property such as apartments, offices and industrial space.

An equity REIT invests in and owns various real estate properties. Their revenues come from people renting places in those buildings.
A mortgage REIT invests in mortgages on real estate. Their revenues come from the interest paid on the mortgages.

Typically, a closed-end investment fund that trades on an exchange and uses the pooled capital of many investors to purchase and manage income properties.

High income stocks, or those paying high dividends, are usually the utility stocks or Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT). Traditionally, REITs have high cash flow from real estate rental, which they distribute to shareholders quarterly as dividends.

Some examples include the Wilshire US REIT which tracks more than 80 American real estate investment trusts and the Morgan Stanley Biotech Index which consists of 36 American firms in the biotechnology industry.

But you might be able to do it with a slow moving REIT or paper company. Look at total dollar exposure and the stock's volatility. Be focused on exiting when you're wrong, wherever that is on the price chart.
