Subordinated debentures
Debt that is subordinated, or junior, has a priority lower than that of other debt in terms of payment (but like all bonds, it ranks ahead of stock).

Usually convertible bonds are subordinated debentures: that is, their claim to the assets of the issuing corporation is subordinated to that of senior issues.

A specific type of debenture is the subordinated debenture. In the event of liquidation, these debentures are subordinated to designated debt obligations, typically bank loans or notes payable.

Debenture bond
An unsecured bond whose holder has the claim of a general creditor on all assets of the issuer not pledged specifically to secure other debt. Compare subordinated debenture bond and collateral trust bonds.

becomes a general creditor and therefore is less likely than the secured creditors to recover in full. Because of their high risk factor, debentures pay higher rates of interest than secured debt of the same issuer. See also subordinated debenture.
