Securities exchanges, such as the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and American Stock Exchange (Amex), as well as the Nasdaq Stock Market, have the authority to halt and delay trading in a security.

Trading halts usually occur when a publicly-traded company is going to release significant news about itself. The halt in trading for the affected security gives investors time to review the news and assess its impact.

Trading halts are short periods where the active trading on a security is suspended. Often, the issuance of a trading halt has to do with some type of public announcement that made about the security or the company that issues the security.
