Stock Trading Tutorial: Stops and Trailing Stops
One of the most common questions I hear about order types is concerning the usage of trailing stops.

Trailing Stop
A trailing stop is a feature of many trading applications which helps you lock in profits. The software will watch each of your positions. Each time one of your long positions goes up, the software adjusts your stop loss.

Trailing Stop
Having a long position and a price that is moving up after opening the trade, a trailing stop will track the price up-move signaling if price is falling back more than an allowed value.

Average True Range Trailing stops are far more volatile than stops based on moving averages and are prone to whipsaw you in and out of positions except where there is a strong trend.

To manage the trade if it moved in your favor you placed a 100 Point trailing stop on the position at 1.4260. Now in this example if the market moved against you from the start 100 points your stop at 1.
