Trendlines in Forex Trading
7.1. What are Trendlines?
Trendlines are straight lines that connect each successive rising bottom to show an uptrend or each consecutive declining top to indicate a downtrend.

 


Trendlines
Learning to use trendlines should be one of the first things you learn when developing some sort of stock trading strategy.

Trendline
Line used by technical analysts to chart the past direction of an exchange rate in order to help predict future price movements. It usually connects price levels on a chart where supply and demand were at their highest.

Definition
Trendline
In charting, a line drawn across the bottom or top of a price chart indicating the direction or trend of price movement. If up, the trendline is called bullish; if down, it is called bearish.

Definition: A trendline is is line that follows the current trend in a currency pair. While the science of using trendlines is often not exact, it gives you an idea of the approximate future actions of a trending currency pair.

On the graph above the number 1 is a trendline drawn on the Relative Strength Index (RSI) which is an indicator that tracks momentum changes.

The general principle of trendline analysis is that once a trend has been formed (two or more highs/lows have moved to touch the trendline but then subsequently reversed) the trendline will remain intact until broken.

Trendline Evolution
A medium to longer term uptrend or downtrend not always evolutes the same way.

Trendlines
To recognize the trend better and to decide at what prices to enter and exit a trade, traders often draw trendlines.

Natural trendlines
Should be defined by touching the RS plot at least three times
User decides if natural trend line takes precedence over 45 degree lines.

TRENDLINES
Overview
One of the basic tenets put forth by Charles Dow in the Dow Theory is that security prices do trend. Trends are often measured and identified by "trendlines.

Trendlines can apply to non-securities-related data that is depicted in a graph. For example, a trendline could be applied to a graph which shows the birthrate in a country over time.

Trendlines are one the most simple and dynamic tools an analyst can employ... but I have yet to make my million dollars, so he was wrong -- or at least early -- on that point.

A Linear Regression Trendline is one of the most important forex technical indicators. In the charts it is a straight line plotted through past prices of a given security via the least squares method.

Trendlines: Straight lines drawn on a chart below reaction lows (in an uptrend) or above rally peaks (in a downtrend) that determine the steepness of the current trend. The breaking of a trendline usually signals a trend reversal.

Trendline A line drawn that connects either a series of highs or lows in a trend. The trendline can represent either support as in an uptrend line or resistance as in a downtrend line. Consolidations are marked by horizontal trendlines.

Trendline
A line that is drawn over pivot highs or under pivot lows to show the prevailing direction of price. Trendlines are a visual representation of support and resistance in any time frame.

Trendline A line connecting two or more points on the chart, defining the trend over the chosen timeframe.

Trendline - Line that connects two or more points on a chart and represents the slope of movement.

Trendline: A straight line drawn to connect significant high or low prices of a security or index. If the security is advancing the low prices are used to construct the line (uptrendline).

Trendline
A technical chart line that depicts the past movement of a security and that is used in an attempt to help predict future price movements.

Up Trendline: A straight line drawn upward and to the right below the reaction lows. The longer the up trendline has been in effect and the more times it has been tested, the more significant it becomes.

5WD Trendline Rules
The 1st, 3rd and 5th wave impulses in EWT become Top-1-2 in the Decline's count. Connect the 3rd (1) and 5th (2) waves with a trendline. Ignore the 1st (Top) wave, which that trendline can violate in any way it wants.

Down Trendline: A straight line drawn down and to the right above successive rally peaks. The longer the down trendline has been in effect and the more times it has been tested, the more significant it becomes.

Wedges
Bearish wedges are small continuation patterns that represent brief pauses within an already existing downtrend. They are characterized by converging trendlines and have a definite bearish bias.

Flags are very similar to Pennants. However, with a Flag, the price trendlines tend to run parallel, whereas with a Pennant, the price trendlines tend to converge. John J.

Trendline support resistance provides an excellent buy/sell signals in trending market. On an uptrend, buy around the support trend line level and place a stop order below the trend line support. Take profit on the trend line resistance level.

Trendline/Trend Line
A straight line on a chart that connects consecutive tops or consecutive bottoms of prices. Trendlines are used to identify levels of support and resistance.

Trendlines - Declining Trendline
A straight line usually drawn to define a downtrend against or through price bar highs.
Support
A horizontal line (floor) which has acted as a barrier to lower prices. Usually defined by two or more price bar lows.

Trendlines are great but you can't always find them because three price bar lows (or highs in the case of a downtrend) might not always line up. The other thing is that trendlines need to exist for about a month or more if they are to be valid.

Trendline - a line on the price chart connecting a number of descending and ascending maximums. For building up a trendline at least two points are necessary.

A trendline is a simple charting technique that adds a line to a chart to represent the trend in the market or a stock. Drawing a trendline is as simple as drawing a straight line that follows a general trend.

Open balance or loan receivable that is considered uncollectible and is written off by a firm.

Auto Trendlines
This indicator attempts to draw two automatic trendlines at the rightmost (current) side of the chart.

When a trendline on an indicator points in opposite direction then trendline is on price.

Also, a trendline can be seen to be acting as a resistance level coming out of the Dumpling Top Pattern this past October. The more indicators that can be identified at candlestick reversal signals, the more compelling that information becomes.

Note that a trendline was drawn from a significant low (beginning of trend) to a significant high (end of trend); the trading software calculated the retracement levels.

This little trendline trick comes from the book, Trader Vic - Methods of a Wall Street Master. This is one of my favorite technical analysis books of all time. This gem comes from Chapter 7 - Where Fortunes Are Made: Identifying a Change of Trend.

Captions and trendlines: Use MACD Histogram if you want to draw trendlines or place captions on the histogram. Otherwise, they are left "hanging in the air" if you zoom or change time periods.

Chartists use trendlines to spot trends in security prices. A trendline is a line that is drawn between two or more points on a price chart. An upward-sloping trendline connects two or more low points (troughs) on a price chart.

Or what if the trendlines slope is strongly negative....but the current price has broken to 2 standard deviations above the regression line? Buying opportunity?

You can confirm trendline breakouts by comparing the trend lines in the cumulative index to swing trend lines in the price chart.

Chaos theory : A theory that holds that statistically noisy behavior may occur rand...

Channels: The area between two parallel trendlines, the upper trendline connecting most of the important price peaks or closes and the lower trendline connecting the important lows or closes.

The pattern is more reliable if it appears at or near a support or resistance line, or a trendline. Secondly, the colors of the candlesticks are important.

Needless to say, the world is not perfect and not all market participants follow the same technical indicators, draw the same trendlines and identify the same support & resistance levels.
