Triple witching hour occurs four times a year, and is a time when traders should watch out. It's actually when single stock options, stock index options, and stock index futures contracts all expire at once.

What It Is:
On the third Friday of every March, June, September, and December, contracts for stock index futures, stock index options, and stock options all expire at the end of the day.

The Triple Witching Hour refers to the four time annually that the S&P Futures contract, the S&P 100 index option and options on individual stocks expire simulateously.

Triple Witching Hour Slang used for the last hour of trading before the simultaneous expiration of stock options, index options, and index futures. This occurs four times a year on the third Friday of each quarter's end.
