Upthrusts Definition
An upthrust is a false breakout through a horizontal resistance area. The concept was first developed by Richard Wyckoff, who was one of the great stock operators from the early 19th century.

Upthrusts are false breakouts that can trap the unsuspecting trader. Upthrust patterns quickly reverse, with the stock or index then often testing the opposite end of the trading range.

Upthrust
The price movement that carries prices through and above observed resistance areas. If these new price levels do not hold and prices pull back under the breached resistance level, it is called an upthrust. It now becomes a bearish signal.

Upthrust
A situation that occurs when prices break above resistance, but soon reverse course and break back below resistance. Also referred to as a failed (bullish) signal and is considered bearish.

UPTHRUST -- An "upthrust" occurs when prices break out above important resistance and then retreat below this same resistance level. The pattern implies that eventually the previous support level will be tested.

break above a significant level and generate a buy signal, but suddenly reverse course and negate the buy signal, thus "trapping" the bulls that acted on the signal with losses. A bull trap is another form of whipsaw and relates to the upthrust.

This is the opposite of an upthrust.
