Of all the indicators in the investment industry, the Volatility Index (VIX) is one of the most widely accepted.

 


VIX & VXN Buy Signal
When the $VIX or $VXN spike (usually they both spike during the same periods) buy. If history repeats itself, which it has done often, buying $VIX and $VXN spikes has proven quite profitable.

The VIX is based on data collected by the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE). Each day the CBOE calculates a figure for a "synthetic option" based on prices paid for puts and calls.

VIX computes volatility of four OEX contracts in two nearby months and is published daily by the CBOE.

VIX usually has an inverse relationship to the market with the value of VIX increasing when the market declines and decreasing when the market rises. However, plotting VIX with an inverted scale resolves this dichotomy.
How is it Used?

VIX, created by the Chicago Board Options Exchange in 1993, is the Volatility Index. It measures the market's expectation of near term volatility as reflected in the options prices of S&P 500 stock index.

Notice when the VIX got stretched significantly away from its 10 Day MA (blue line) to the upside (points A) that the S&P 500 made a bottom (points B) and then reversed to the upside.

VIX Indicator
The VIX is a measurement of volatility. Very simply, it measures the tone of selling which can get panicky near market bottoms.

VIX Volatility Index - The VIX is derived using the implied volatility in the S&P 500 index calls and puts. It is an expectation of the markets volatility over the next 30 days. The higher the volatility, the more fear there is in the markets.

VOLATILITY
A measure of the fluctuation in the market price of the underlying security. Mathematically, volatility is the annualized standard deviation of returns.

VIX
The implied volatility on the S&P 100 (OEX) option. This volatility is meant to be a forward looking volatility. It is calculated from both calls and puts that are near the money. The VIX is a popular measure of market risk.

Shows the market's expectation of 30-day volatility. It is constructed using the implied volatilities of a wide range of S&P 500 index options.

The VIX and VXO have been introduced by the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE). They are hypothetical options that are at-the-money and have 30 days until expiration.

Russell 2000 and recent critical day signals. Each critical day is given to members on average 3 days in advance. When a critical day approaches, it cautions traders that a reversal of the shortest segment of price trend may occur.

The VIX (and VOX and VXN) measures fear and optimism as manifested in options activity. When large numbers of traders become fearful, the VIX reading rises, and when complacency about the market reigns, the VIX reading falls.

The VIX, which I have already spoken in these columns, is the volatility index of S & P 500.

The VIX is a measure of volatility in the market. Usually, it increases as the market decreases. Its usefulness is in showing when a trend reversal is about to take place.

There are five up days in a row. Usually after that many up days in a row, a reversal happens (five is a Fibonacci number).

That VIX rose over 66 percent at one point today, and online brokerage platforms were down for almost an entire hour. We had no one to call and nothing could be done. The situation was completely out of our hands.

Williams VIX Fix
When used on an S&P index, this indicator is supposed to simulate the VIX. QT allows you to apply it to any chart. The article describing it was published in December 2006 Issue of "Active Trader."

Typically, VIX (and by extension implied volatility) has an inverse relationship to the market. A chart of the VIX will usually be shown with the scale inverted to show the low readings at the top and high readings at the bottom.

In June 2010, Source issued S&P VIX Futures Source ETF and became the first European ETF provider to offer investors exposure to volatility in an ETF form.

Since I follow the VIX sometimes myself, I took a look at the chart and saw that it was at a multi month low. I was probably busy doing other things also at the time, so I didn't take any action at the time.

Mass Index
Donald Dorsey's mass index is used to signal an approaching trend reversal. The index is a 25 day moving sum of two moving averages.

Figure 3 shows the development of the implied volatility for the VIX and VXN. The VIX is an index, traded on the CBOE, which reflects the implied volatility of 8 at-the money, 30-day options on stock of the S&P 500.

Before September 2008, the S&P 500 Index was holding steady and the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) was low. As the credit crisis deepened in September, 2008, the market declined substantially while VIX increased dramatically.

The financial sector as a whole fell 2.4% today. Today's sell-down spiked the market's fear gauge, the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX); it advanced some 12%, rising from a four-month low set late last week.
