A wash trade (not to be confused with a wash sale) is an illegal form of stock manipulation in which an investor simultaneously sells and buys shares in order to artificially increase trading volume and thus the stock price.

A matched deal which produces neither a gain nor a loss.

Wash trades or sales: Wash trades are trades involving no change in beneficial ownership; i.e.

- Wash trade: This is an attempt to sell and repurchase the same security for generating increased activity and price.
- Bear raid: This is an effort at pushing the stock price down through heavy or short selling.
