The Zig Zag filters out small movements in price to highlight trends. It looks for price moves greater than the threshold level and plots straight lines between those points. The Zig Zag is more of a visual tool than an indicator.
The Zig Zag indicator attempts to plot only the most significant market turns, and is used by many traders to try and find the reason why markets turn.

(1) A filter that only shows moves of a predetermined percentage. Any moves of less than the set percentage are ignored. This is the same as Swing Charts.

On this chart I used zig zag with a 3 period setting to help identify the swings. I don't think it is necessary to use this on your charts but if it helps you to better identify this pattern, then by all means use it! ...

If you try and trade this way all through the day, you will wind up getting burnt out and start making mistakes from all the zig zagging price action. That's why it's best to try to limit your trading time, especially with this type of trading.

Over the long run (i.e., ten years or more) the VTWSX will outperform the majority of mutual funds as the averages zig zag there way ever higher in my opinion. Admittedly the last decade doesn't support that perspective :) ...
