In a bull market, an Elliott three-wave pattern that subdivides into a 5-3-5 pattern with the top of wave B noticeably lower than the start of wave A. In a bear market, this pattern will be inverted.

Zigzags, Flats and Irregulars
These corrective waves are broadly called ABC corrections. They differ by the distance their subwaves move in relation to each other and by the way they subdivide.
They are more difficult to recognize because they come in many variations, such as zigzags, flats, and triangles. They can be strung together to create complex corrections.
A declining trend is an downward zigzag of price movement that results when the bears are in control. We define the trend, as well as postulate future price movement, by drawing a line across the declining tops.
This zigzag pattern of flow forms the bases of the channel pattern chart. This zigzag pattern of resistance and support movements occurs in foreign exchange markets because FX trading is also a form of non-random energy that is dissipated.
Because the market normally moves in a zigzag pattern rather than a straight line, trend lines are very useful in recognizing trends and identifying significant highs or peaks and significant lows or troughs.
Look at the diagram above. As you can see, this zigzag pattern is making its way up (bull market). When the market moves up and then pulls back, the highest point reached before it pulled back is now resistance.
