Aged Tawny Port - which can be recognized by the number of years of aging written in the label - represent a very appreciated style of Port and are generally aged for 10, 20 or 30 years and even more than 40 years.

 


Aged Tawny-This is the real thing in Tawny Port. These are Ports which have spent a long time in wooden barrels.

Now we're talking Port with finesse and refinement. Aged means it is a blend of Tawny Ports over several years. These can be aged for ten, twenty, thirty, and even forty years.

Aged Coffee
Coffee that is maintained in special warehouses for several years in order to reduce acidity and increase body. Aged coffee, also known as vintage coffee, is warehoused longer than old crop or mature coffees.

Barrel Aged
Wines that are fermented in containers made of inert material, eg stainless steel, and later transferred to wooden (usually oak) barrels for a period of maturation.

Age / Aged
As they age, wines tend to turn from purple (for reds) / yellowish (for whites) hue to a brick red / deep golden-orange colour as they age.

Barrel aged: Wines that are fermented in containers such as stainless steel, and then placed into wooden barrels for maturation. It may also refer to wines that are both fermented and aged in the barrel.

Aged and new wines. Vintners design wines which are supposed to be drunk immediately, and wines which will be better after some time in the bottle.

Wine aged in small new oak barrels (Barrique) takes on some of the compounds in the barrel, such as vanillin and wood tannins.

Port aged predominantly outside of the bottle, in either wooden barrels or tanks, is fruity, relatively inexpensive, and ready to drink immediately upon purchase.

Wines aged sur lie (French for "on the lees") are kept in contact with the dead yeast cells and are not racked or otherwise filtered. This is mainly done for whites, to enrich them (it is a normal part of fermenting red wine, and so is not noted).

Barrel-aged/matured
This simply means that the wine has been aged/matured in a wooden barrel, usually made of oak, before bottling.

Barrel-aged. Refers to wines that are fermented in containers such as stainless steel, then placed in oak barrels to mature.

Barrel Aged:Denotes a wine that has spent a period of time in barrels before bottling. This affects wine in numerous ways-the flavors in newly blended wines knit together, tannins in red wines soften and white wines become richer and more full-bodied.

Fino is aged in cellars in Jerez whereas Manzanilla is aged in the bodegas of coastal town Sanlucar de Barrameda.

Wine can be aged in barrels of oak or other woods to impart and mature flavors. Wooden barrels leech tannins into wine and can also impart "smoky" flavors if the barrels have been toasted, short of actual charring.

Woody: Wine aged too long in a cask or aged in a cask and/or inferior wood.
Yeast: A single-cell microorganism on the skin of the grapes that causes fermentation. .

Tawny Port has been aged in a barrel for a number of years (usually listed on the label). As the Port throws sediment, it is racked into a new barrel, leaving the sediment behind, as well as the coloring agent.

Some people use the term aroma for younger wines; bouquet for those that have been aged. aromaticUsed to refer to a wine, particularly white wines, with intensely floral or fruity aromas, such as Muscat or Viognier.

Tawny ports are aged in old oak barrels for long periods and as a result they are characterised by complex rancio characters. They also do not improve after being bottled and released for sale.

They're aged for two to three years in stainless steel or barrels before bottling. Ruby Ports are the simplest and cheapest style, and can be harsh if not well made. White Ports are made in both dry and sweet styles from white grapes.
