An AVA is a geographical indication. It stands for American Viticultural Area and is the US equivalent of an appellation in France.

The AVA includes six subordinate AVAs; these are Yakima Valley, Red Mountain, Walla Walla Valley, Horse Heaven Hills, Rattlesnake Hills, and Wahluke Slope.

The French term, Appellation d'Origine Contrőlée, (AOC), refers to a set of comprehensive regulations that specify the precise geographic area in which a given French wine can be made.

American Viticultural Area (AVA)

Though the Napa Valley is just 30 miles long and five miles wide at its widest, there are 14 distinct appellations within the broader AVA.

Both California and Australia now have significant amounts of land devoted to the Viognier grape. There are also notable planting increases in areas of moderate climate such as Virginia's Monticello AVA region.
