Among the appellations of Provence, Bandol is the one which is getting the higher worldwide attention.

Bandol wine comes from Provence in southern France. It's most famous for its red wines that are full-bodied and made from the mourvèdre grape.

Some of the best rosés are from France's Bandol in Provence as well as Tavel in the Southern Rhõne. These rosés are made with typical Rhõne grapes such as Grenache, Cinsault, Mourvèdre, and Syrah.

It is the grape of the very tannic, and darkly colored Bandol (from the south of France). It is these very characteristics that makes the grape important for blending. It is one of the 13 grapes found in Chateauneuf-du-Pape.

Wine lovers can also discover the typical terroirs of Bandol, Palette, Bellet and Cassis to taste full body red wines and aromatic white wines.

Probably Mourvèdre's finest region is Bandol on the Mediterranean coast of Provence where it dominates the region, producing wines reminiscent of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Until the late 1960s, however, the main French plantings of mourvédre were in Provence, where it is the dominant grape in Bandol. Total mourvédre vineyards in France increased from 2,200 acres in 1968 to nearly 14,000 by 1988.

CALITOR: Red wine grape variety grown in the Lirac AC north-west of Avignon and in the coastal Bandol AC between Toulon and Marseille, France.

When possible, try to pair cuisine from a particular region with wines from that region. For example, Provencal grilled lamb with garlic and rosemary with red Bandol or Chateauneuf-du-Pape.
