Zinfandel (blackberry jam and black pepper)
An important red-wine grape grown mostly in California. This varietal produces robust reds and is also made into the popular blush wines (white zinfandel).

The bouquet is usually distinguished by aromas of black pepper, mulberries and blackcurrants sometimes accompanied by a hint of tar.

Good syrah offers a captivating aroma of ripe black fruits, black pepper, and a distinctive gamey scent aficionados often compare to the smell of roasting meat.

On its own, the flavor of Petite Sirah can be vaguely black peppery, but can mostly be described as "vinous" and, although agreeable, pleasant, and sometimes delicious, not highly distinctive.

Deep, dark fruit in the form of blueberry, plum and currant debut on the palate, surrounded by a lovely mix of dark chocolate, espresso and black pepper spice. The tannins are tame, the finish is strong and the fruit is top notch.

As with "smoky," above, a somewhat controversial term that not all wine tasters agree on. I suspect it's a blend of "meaty" and "black pepper" flavors in red Rhone wines like Cote-Rotie and Chateauneuf-du-Pape.

Zinfandel
