Ampelographers believe there are two distinct clones of Bonarda Piemontese-Bonarda di Gattinara from the Vercelli hills near Gattinara and Bonarda Novarese from the Novara hills near Ghemme.

Local name for the Cabernet Franc clone grown in northeast Italy.

Bonarda, the most widely planted red grape of Argentina which is probably of Italian origin, although very little is now found there. It is slightly peppery but pleasingly fruity in style.

BONARDA (PIEMONTESE):
Minor red grape grown in Piedmont region of Italy. Makes fruity red wine of mild intensity when blended with wine from Barbera grape.
BONARDA NOVARESE:
Alternate name for Uva Rara grape. (See below).

Bonarda: Intense red with violet hues; strong tannins; black fruit and plums; ages well.
Cabernet Sauvignon: Adapts well to all Argentine regions. Complex aromas of tobacco, black pepper, red fruits. Full-bodied and structured through aging.

Ripe and juicy, warm and plummy; full and soft and slightly sweet, a very accessible wine and a good match with roast beef.

It is a silver jug which gave the name to the most famous wine of this area, Gutturnio, produced with Barbera and Croatina grapes, here known as Bonarda.

Merlot, Tempranillo, Sangiovese, Syrah and Bonarda are stars of northern Mendoza, while Merlot stands out in the south; Cabernet Sauvignon is close behind. Uco's Malbec is ripe, concentrated and spicy, while Cabernet Franc shows exceptional ripeness.

Of significance are several major red and white varietals that excel and thrive in Argentina. Thankfully, the usual favorite reds of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Pinot Noir, Tempranillo, Bonarda, ...
