Grapes used for the production of Madeira are white and include Bual, Malmsey, Sercial and Verdelho. In the least valued Madeira is usually used the Tinta Negra Mole grape, a red berried grape.

The very best Madeiras are made from four white grapes: sercial, verdelho, bual, and malmsey, which give the four styles of Madeira their names.

BOAL: Has alias name of Bual and, under this name, the grapes are mostly used in the production of medium rich fortified wines that come from the island of Madeira.

Has the synonym name Rabigato that, itself under the alias name of Boal/Bual, is one of at least three other varieties used in the production of the fortified wines for which the island of Madeira is famous.

It comes in several styles, including dry (sercial), medium-dry (bual), medium-sweet (verdelho) and sweet (malmsey).

Verdelho (white)
Portuguese variety grown in Madeira where it makes a fortified style between Sercial and Bual and grown as a still wine grape in Australia, especially Western Australia.

This style, (probably as a result of tradition rather than any inherent quality of the grape type) makes it richer than the driest, Sercial, but not as sweet as Bual or the sweetest, Malmsey.

The four classic grapes, in order from driest to sweetest, are Sercial, Verdelho, Bual and Malmsey. Since Madeira can age so long and so effortlessly, producers don't release the better vintage wines until they're very old.

Another alias name used for this variety is Boal/Bual in its incarnation as one of at least four varieties using the same name for use in fortified wines on the island of Madeira.

Maderization: A rich, white fortified wine resembling Sherry originally produced on the Portuguese island off the coast of west Africa of the same name. The more important varieties of Madeira are Serial, Rainwater, Boal (or Bual), and Malmsey.

If your pie is sweeter, try the next level up the totem pole of sweetness: Bual will be much richer and sweeter than Verdelho, and should complement your sweet-style pumpkin pie as well as an Oloroso Sherry.

Semillon is also known to be Hunter (River Riesling), Boal/Bual of Madeira, Chevrier, Columbier, Malaga and Blanc Doux. SHIRAZ [SHEAR-oz] Grape variety that once have been thought to have originated in Shiraz. It also pertains to the French Syrah.
