BUTT
A large wine barrel, usually just over 100 gallons in capacity. Normal barrel sizes have approximately 50 or 60 gallon capacities, depending upon where they were made.

Butt = 108 gallons (Used for sherry)
Hogshead = 57 gallons (Used for port. Not all Hogsheads are the same size it kind of depends if it holds Sherry or port)

Bota (butt) Oak barrel with a capacity of 550-600 litres and used to age Sherry wines. It is also a small container with a nozzle made from goatskin and waterproofed with tar and used to carry wine.

George, Duke of Clarence, brother to King Edward IV of England, was said to have been drowned in a butt of Malmsey in the Tower of London in 1478, though this story is probably apocryphal.

When the flor dies and sinks to the bottom of the butt the wine loses its protection from oxidation conferred by the coating of yeast, and it begins to deepen and develop a rich, nutty flavour.
