Carignan
The most widely-planted red wine grape in France is Carignan (sometimes spelled Carignane in the US, a.k.a. Carginano in Italy and Cariñena or Mazeulo in Spain).

 


Carignan is believed to have originated in Spain in the Aragon region and was historically a component of neighboring Rioja's red wine blend. From Spain it gained prominence in Algeria and fed that country's export production to France.

Also known as Carignane ( California ), Cirnano ( Italy ). Once a major blending grape for jug wines, Carignan's popularity has diminished, and plantings have dropped from 25,111 acres in 1980 to 8,883 in 1994.

Widely planted in the South of France, California and Chile. Often used as a workhorse, its tough, hardy character the base for many cheap reds. Likes warm conditions.

CARIGNANE
Semi-classic red-wine grape grown in southern France and Spain, Italy, and the Central Coast of California. Most often used for blends and vin de table.

Carignane: Good grapey, juicy fruit. Medium tannin. Blend it with Grenache to make a red table wine.
Grenache: Cherry in the colour, aroma, and flavour. Can make a wonderful rosé.

Carignan, originating in the northern Spanish district of Cariňena, it is now the most widely grown red grape in France particularly in the Languedoc-Roussillon. High yielding, producing deep purple coloured wines high in tannins and alcohol.

In France this variety is also known as Carignane noire, Crignare or Plant d'Espagne. In Spain it is also known as Tinto or Cariñena, and in Italy as Carignano.

- Red: Carignan, Cinsault, Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot have replaced other mediocre grape varieties such as Aramon and Alicante.

In the Languedoc the term refers to varieties such as Mourvèdre, Syrah and Grenache, which are encouraged in place of Carignan, Cinsaut and other lesser grapes. The minimum quantity of "improving varieties" is laid down in appellation regulations.

As with Corbières, Minervois is an appellation where Carignan once ruled, blended with the other red grapes of the Languedoc, including Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Lledoner Pelut, Cinsaut and others.

In this appellation is the Carignan grape to dominate vineyards and with which are being produced good wines only in case the yield in vineyards is pretty low.

Merlot is the third most widely planted grape in France (after Carignan and Grenache) and first in the Bordeaux region, especially in St.

Perdera is made from 90% Monica, 5% Carignano and 5% Bovale Sardo grapes grown in the Argiolas' Perdera vineyard. The nose exudes deep, ripe black and red berry fruits - blackberry, black raspberry, blueberry - as well as notes of earth and menthol.

The blend is comprised of a bewildering assortment of grapes: Syrah, Petite Syrah, Zinfandel, Carignane, Barbera and Malbec. Actually given the diversity the recipe doesn't really matter as no one characteristic is definable.

All of the wines were either 100% Carmenere or a blend with Cab or Carignan. The tasting featured eight Carmenere wines each introduced by eight young, dynamic winemakers, who took turns spotlighting their wine.

Cinsaut is often blended with Grenache and Carignane. Synonyms include Cinq-saou, Black Malvoisie (in California) Boudales, Plant d'Arles, Picardin noir, Morterille noire, Cuviller, and Hermitage (in South Africa and parts of Europe).

The "noble" Cabernet-Sauvignon was crossed with the "common" Carignane to arrive at the Ruby Cabernet grape, a cross intended to produce a variety capable of surviving the hot climes of the Central Valley well enough to produce a decent wine.

This accolade is currently being fought over by Ribera del Duero (rich Tempranillo-based reds) and Priorato (small quantities of dense, mineralic wines from low yielding Grenache and Carignan planted on steep terraces).
