Varietal character
Varietal character refers to the specific traits of a given grape variety of the ensuing wine.

So when we talk about Zinfandel characteristics, what jumps to mind is the intense fruit/jam characters that the wine has.

Characteristics
Vine
The vine is fairly vigorous and high yielding particularly if grown in a warm to hot environment with suitable soils, but it is susceptible to several diseases.

Character
The impression of a wine being solid and having integrity and substance.

Charmat Process: The process of producing sparkling wines in tanks rather than bottles. Often used to mass-produce inexpensive sparkling wines.

Character
That which makes a wine distinctive. A region's winemaking tradition, soils, and grape varieties combine to produce a wine's character.
Clarification
The process of removing cloudiness in the wine by filtration and/or fining.

Character Port is a house style that is not vintage dated. It is a simple, inexpensive style that will not improve with age. The label will not say "Character Port," it will have a brand name instead.

Another characteristic of this AC is that it is the only one in France which requires the name of the varietal on the label. Only eight grape varieties are permitted and most of them are of German origin. The minimum natural degree of alcohol is 8.

Aerobic
Characterizing the type of organism that needs oxygen to thrive. Top-fermenting yeast is an aerobic organism.
Alcohol
Ethyl alcohol or ethanol, which is a by-product of fermentation.

Vintage Character-This is basically a marketing gimmick designed to associate slightly above-average Ruby Ports with the reputation of the much greater Vintage Ports.

cheesy A characteristic of the of certain very old . May also be a flaw in some other wines.

The typical characteristics of Cõtes du Rhõne wines are due to terroir and grape variety, which by no means underestimates the importance of the human touch for what concerns the Appellation's reputation and unique personality.

FOOD MATCH: Characteristic Chianti, made for red meat; its fresh acidity and fruit makes it a natural with snappy, tomato-based pasta dishes or, as noted, a caprese salad or just about anything made with fresh summer tomatoes and basil.

When young, a good Pinot Noir exhibits the simpler and fruity characteristics of cherry, plum and raspberries. As they age, they become more rich and complex and will continue to do so in proper conditions.

Most are of the muscat type, having the unique aromatic character commonly associated with muscat wines.

Most French wines are everyday vins ordinaires, of no outstanding regional, varietal, or vintage characteristics.

Hold the wine up against a white background (a napkin or piece of paper works fine) and notice its color characteristics. The more wines you sample, the more similarities and differences you'll begin to notice.

A good wine will have a good balance of all four characteristics. Aging will soften tannins (see Tips for a more detailed description).

Most white wines and light-bodied reds are best consumed when young (1 to 3 years), as it is during this time that the primary fruit characters are at their most appealing.

As with apple, peaches and other fruits, individual grape varieties have quite different characteristics.
