Clare Riesling

Wine Clairette RoseClaret

The wine has many imposters, including Clare Riesling, Welschriesling, and Laski Riesling, grapes with no ancestral claim to the noble grape Riesling. It does have a few legitimate aliases, though, including Rhine, White, and Johannisberg Riesling.

In Australia this variety was also known as Rhine Riesling to avoid confusion with Clare Riesling (Crouchen) and Hunter River Riesling (Sémillon). Elsewhere it is also known as Riesling Blanc and Weisser Riesling.

CROUCHEN: (aka Cruchen) White-wine grape translocated from France to Australia and South Africa. In Australia it has been historically known as Clare Riesling presumably because of an identification error. See Cape Riesling above for main information.

It has its origins in France, although it is now rarely grown there. Instead, it is more commonly found in Australia, where it is often referred to as Clare Riesling, and in South Africa, where it is often called Cape Riesling.

Variety translocated from France to Australia and South Africa where it is used in the production of white wine. In Australia it has been historically known as Clare Riesling presumably being a regional marketing name.
