Zinfandel grapes on the vine
Zinfandel, in Europe known as Primitivo and in Croatia as Crljenak Kaštelanski, is a red-skinned wine grape.

Carole Meredith, an expert in genetic mapping at the University of California Davis has proved through the use of DNA that Zinfandel and an indigenous Croatian grape called Crljenak are one and the same.

Recently the origin was discovered to have DNA relating back to the Italian grape Primitivo, but it actually goes farther back than that to a grape in Croatia called 'Crljenak.

It is probable that Zinfandel and Primitivo are in fact two clones of the same grape variety and Plavac Veliki a variety derived from Zinfandel and Dobricic and known also as Crljenak.
