CUTTING
A piece of grape vine, usually 10 to 20 inches long, cut from a dormant vine in wintertime for use in propagating new vines in spring.

Cuttings of Carménère were imported by Chilean growers from Bordeaux during the 19th century, where they were frequently confused with Merlot vines.

Vine cuttings are called slips or scions. These are usually grafted onto rootstock that has been specially cultivated to combine growth vigor with resistance to disease. They are then put into sand for one season. This is called bench-grafting.
