Zinfandel's Dirty Secret
Zinfandel was used, as stated previously, as a blending grape for many decades before coming into its own in the 1960's and 1970's.
They have aromas of cabbage, dirty socks, rubber and the like, and when found in wine are considered a major fault. The term 'reductive' is used to describe when such aromas are detected in wine.

The flavours are clean and fruit-rich, rather than the occasionally dirty and questionable character of more ancient wines. They are textured, rich, may we suggest even hedonistic?

Corked
A "Corked" wine suffers from a specific fault where a mouldy cork (or faulty processing of the cork) has caused a chemical called trichloranisole to form, imparting a dirty aroma and flavour to the wine.
Can either be a positive or a negative. In a positive sense it can denote powerful characters of clean, rich and hearty soil, as in 'an earthy complexity', but it can also describe wines that are too dense and sometimes dirty.
