Doux (French term)
Doux is the French term for sweet.
Downy mildew
Downy mildew is a common but devastating vine disease due to excessive humid and warm weather conditions.

A wine that is not sweet because all perceptible sugar was consumed during the fermentation process.

A common vine disease favoured by warm, humid conditions. It results in unhealthy leaves and shrivelled fruit. May be controlled with the use of Bordeaux mixture.

Doux" With a resounding 5% sugar content, this Champagne is a bubbly dessert wine.
When the grapes are pressed for Champagne, a gentle process is used so that the skins are not incorporated. This accounts for the wine's delicate color.

Vin Doux Naturel
A lightly fortified wine from the south of France where grape spirit is added before fermentation is complete. This kills the yeast causing the wine to be sweet due to the unfermented sugar.

Vin Doux Naturel (van doo nah-too-rel')
Literally this means "naturally sweet wine" in French.

Vin Doux Naturels
The most renowned wines of Languedoc-Roussillon certainly are the ones belonging to the category of Vin Doux Naturels, naturally sweet wines.

Vin doux naturel (VDN): Sweet dessert wines primarily from southern France, made in a process similar to Port, i.e.: fortified to 18-21% alcohol by volume. White versions are typically made from the Muscat grape, reds from Grenache.

Sweet French wine that has been fortified by the addition of brandy.
VINHO VERDE
A specific Portuguese wine best when young; literally means: green wine.

Doux: Sweet. Usually the sweetest category of sparkling wines.

Dry: Without a sweet taste. But in Champagne it means sweet.

7) Doux* (very, very sweet)
*In some cases, you may stumble upon a sparkling wine labeled Doux. This is supposedly even sweeter than the Demi-Sec, but I've never even seen a bottle of it before. Do you know what "Doux" translates to from French?

(d) doux, süss, dolce, sweet, sød, cktjüy, dulce, doce, makea, zoet or sftt, on condition that the wine concerned has a residual sugar content of at least 45 grams per litre.

Dolce: (Italian), doux (French) dulce (Spanish) Sweet.
Dosage: (French) The addition to sparkling wines of a solution of sugar syrup mixed with wine to sweeten them. The amount of dosage determines the wines final sweetness.

The "Vins Doux Naturels" (natural sweet wines), or VDN, are generally produced on shone upon, poor and dry grounds. The vines thus have poor yield and produce musts of a great high content in sugars, 252 grams per liter at least.

It has many synonyms: Cahors , Costa Rossa , Pressac , Auxerrais , Balouzat , Cõt , Noir Doux , Pied de Perdrix , Pied Rouge , Grifforin , Piperdy , Jacobin , Malbec , Malbeck , Monrame .

other varieties and will vary in style from a sparkling white wine with a fruity musky palate as in the Clairette de Die of South-Eastern France through a dry still white wine as is the Frontignac of the Barossa Valley of South Australia, a vin doux ...

Districts: sémillon is the major white grape in the Bordeaux region of France. Sémillon is also known as Hunter (River Riesling), boal/bual of Madeira, chevrier, columbier, malaga and blanc doux.

In Anglo-Saxon countries, apple wine is also known as apple cider or just cider. The French call it cidre doux and in Germany apple wine is called Apfelwein.

There is a wide range of styles from which to choose to suit you taste - from dryest to sweetest they are Extra Brut (with 1.5% residual sugar), Brut, Extra Sec, Sec, Demi-Sec, and Doux (with more than 5% sugar).

Other alias names used for this variety are Chevrier, Columbier, Malaga and Blanc Doux.

" Sec (1.7-3.5%) literally translates to "dry", but is noticeably sweet. No wonder the public is confused! Demi-Sec (3.3-5.0%) is very sweet and Doux (over 5.0%) is extremely sweet. (see our Tasting Notes) ...
