Earthy or earthiness is an aroma and flavor that typically appears in wine made with the following grapes: Sangiovese and Petite Sirah.

Earthy
A wine tasting term. It means just what it sounds like, a slight taste of soil. The French use a term "gout de terroir" that is often used to mean the same thing; although it can also mean that the wine has typical tastes for the region.

earthy: May be used in both a negative and a positive sense; however, I prefer to use earthy to denote a positive aroma of fresh, rich, clean soil. Earthy is a more intense smell than woody or truffle scents.

Balanced

Considered a fault when in excess, but the yeast can impart a restrained complexing spicy and earthy character. Synonym Brett.

In general, Rioja wines are aromatic, flavorful, earthy, and display nuance and delicacy. The primary varietal in Rioja is Tempranillo, and it provides the structure, flavor, aroma, and nuance to the region's wine.

Crianzas generally have aromas of cherry with a vague hints of "earthy" as well as aromas of vanilla and spices. Reserva wines are produced with superior quality grapes and must have a minimum aging period of three years.

Game birds such quail, pheasant, turkey, duck, squab and guinea hen have earthy flavors that are more robust than chicken. Wild game often goes better with racy red wines that have a gamy quality to them, the classic being Burgundian pinot noir.

The wine has a high acid level, with tannin, moderate alcohol and a dry, earthy, full-flavoured palate.

Caution: If too much is used, your wine will have an earthy flavor.
Use: Bentonite should be made up 24 hours before adding to wine. For a standard six gallon kit, add no more than 2 tablespoons of bentonite to 1/2 cup warm water; mix or shake well.

Suggesting more than the smell of herbes de Provence, it encompasses an earthy/herbal concoction of varying degrees of intensity.

It's flavors are reminiscent of sweet red berries, plums, tomatoes, cherries and at times a notable earthy or wood-like flavor, depending on specific growing conditions.

At their best these wines can have a spicy, earthy perfume and rich black fruit flavors mixed with hints of smoke.

Syrah grape originated in Asia Minor where it was called the "Shiraz" grape, as it still is by the Australians. Syrah makes up the primary red wines of the Rhone Valley of France and can make for lush, berry-cherry wines or spare, truffle-earthy ...

In warmer regions, the flavors and aromas tend to be more citruslike, (e.g: grapefruit or pear), plus the characteristic "earthy" taste. New Zealand has had much success with the grape in recent years.
