In the latter province it has the alias names Agliatica, Ellenico, Ellanico, Gnanico and Uva Nera. Of extremely ancient origin, it is responsible for some of the better sturdy red wines of southern Italy - (eg: "Aglianico del Vulture").

The grape is believed to have originated in Greece, introduced to Italy by the Phoenicians. The name is in fact a corruption of 'Ellenico' the Italian word for 'Greek'.
In particular Aglianico, whose name is supposed to come from the ancient city of Elea (the modern Novi Velia) and therefore Eleanico, or from the corruption of the name Ellenico, that is "from Greece".
