Drive south out of Reims towards Epernay - as I did in the introduction to this guide - and it is over the Montagne de Reims that you must climb.

Hautvillers: Small town very close to, and just north of, Epernay in the Champagne region of France.

The majority of Chardonnay is grown in a north-south-running strip to the south of Epernay, called the Cõte des Blanc, including the villages of Avize, Oger, and Le Mesnil-Sur-Oger.

Everybody knows Champagne, made in the Marne Valley around the cities of Reims and Epernay for more than 300 years, a wine so iconic that its name has been casually borrowed by other producers of sparkling wine around the world.

Traditionally Pinot Noir is grown in the Montagne de Reims, Chardonnay in the Cotes des Blancs, and Pinot Meunier in the Marne Valley.
