FER
A red-wine grape grown in limited quantities in southwest France. Fer is the French word for iron, and refers to the hardness of the vine. Its wine is used to impart color, intensity and aroma to local red blends.

 


Fer Servadou is a robust red grape grown now almost exclusively in the South West of France, particularly in Madiran, where it adds aroma and good colour.

FER: Also known as Fer Servadou, Brocol, Braucol, Mansois and Pinenc. The name apparently refers to the iron-hard woodiness of the vine.

Aceria, Acheria, Arrouya, Bordo, Bouchet, Bouchy (Gascony), Breton, Burdeas Tinto, Cabernet, Cabernet Aunis, Cabernet Franco, Capbreton Rouge, Carmenet (Médoc), Fer Servandou, Gamput, Grosse Vidure, Hartling, Kaberne Fran, Messanges Rouge, Morenoa, ...

In addition, the clay subsoil here - known as crasse de fer - is particularly iron rich, and portions of it extend across the appellation.

2000 Rubiana: A red blend in the Spanish style, mostly Graciano with some Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Fer Servadou and Tannat. A light, spicy red with lots of cherry fruit, good for picnics or pasta dishes.

In Argentina the grape known as the Fer is now thought to be a clone of this variety.

The main white grapes varieties cultivated in this area are Petit Manseng, Gros Manseng, Mauzac, Len de Lel (Loin de l'œil), Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle, whereas red grapes include Tannat, Fer Servadou, Duras, Négrette, Auxerrois, ...

None in Australia. In France Verdot is also known as Pienc, Fer Servadou, Petit Verdou or Carmelin. It is not to be confused with the similar but poorer quality Gros Verdot.
History ...

South West of France is the most diverse wine region in France. It is also one of the oldest. Many grape varieties grow only in this region: Tannat, Manseng, Fer Servadou, Mérille and dozen of other varieties.

Sometimes called Fer, Argentinan Malbecs are richer, rounder and fruitier than the European versions. Malbec thrives in Argentina because it gets the necessary hang time on the vine to ripen those lush plum flavors. Unripe Malbec is green and stemmy.
