Finesse
One of the wine tasting terms I most recommend avoiding because it is vague and anthropomorphic. When not applied to wine the term suggests "subtlety in performance, skill" (Random House Dictionary).

Manzanilla - this style of Jerez, produced at Sanlúcar de Barrameda, is very appreciated for its elegance and finesse.

Now we're talking Port with finesse and refinement. Aged means it is a blend of Tawny Ports over several years. These can be aged for ten, twenty, thirty, and even forty years.

CONVERGING STYLES?

A good wine basket indicates originality, discernment and finesse. A subtle yet classic statement in itself, wine baskets enable family, friends, bosses or business contacts to connect at a rare, uncommon level.

SUBTLE: Describes delicate wines with finesse, or flavors that are understated rather than full-blown and overt. A positive characteristic.
SUPPLE: Describes texture, mostly with reds, as it relates to tannin, body and oak. A positive characteristic.

The small portions are brimming with flavor and finesse and are to be savored slowly.

Primarily it's the grape's tannin, acid and sugar content that determines how ripe the grape actually is and they are key components for influencing a wine's future finesse and strategic presence.

SUBTLE: Delicate wines with finesse and elegance. Understated flavors that are well integrated and inspiring.
SUPPLE: Describes texture, mostly with reds, as it relates to tannin, body and oak. Tends to indicate well balanced.

Pretty. Describes a wine of delicacy and finesse.

Proof. measure of alcoholic content. 100 proof is 50% alcohol by volume.

The same writer explained how growers "planted Mourvèdre and Syrah, two low-yield grapes that give the wine finesse, strictly for the benefit of the government inspectors.

Even at the lower levels, fragrance and finesse are features here. Strawberry and violtes are often cited, as well as a fine boned structure and delicate complexity.

Elegance A complimentary term to describe wine that has class, breeding, finesse and style.

Feminine:Describes wines with qualities such as smoothness, roundness, gentleness, finesse, elegance and delicacy. Usage of "feminine" is in decline in favor of these more specific terms.

Parellada is a Spanish white grape used in Cava production, which can add finesse to the blend when grown in cool conditions.

These days there is also a greater understanding of and appreciation for different styles of Pinot Noir wine, even if there is less agreement about those styles--should it be rich, concentrated and loaded with flavor, or a wine of elegance, finesse ...

The alcohol contents of table wines since the 1990s are higher, as are pH levels, and the wines just don't live as long as they once did. I miss the finesse of 1970s "fine red" winemaking and, who knows?, maybe it will return.
