Fruit Set

Wine Fruit characterFruit wine

fruit set - early summer phenomenon which immediately follows flowering. As soon as the vine flowers, a proportion of them are fertilized, or 'set', to become berries, and eventually grapes.

Flowering went well in all three Douro sub-regions but fruit set was slightly less successful due to very rapid shoot growth encouraged by the warm, sunny conditions in May. July was hot with temperatures reaching 40C towards the end of the month.

poor fruit set with immature berries falling off after veraison (blossoming). Widely grown in sections of the Burgenland and Wachau regions, and other areas, of Austria producing soft, full-bodied wines with nutlike aroma.

After three or four years' old: weeping (oozing of the sap), spring growth and bud-break, foliage development, flowering, fruit set, ripening of the grapes, autumn, winter dormancy.
vinegar...
Sour, acidic liquid derived from wine.

Carmenère requires more heat to ripen than the other varietals planted in Bordeaux. This and its erratic tendency to develop a condition called coulure, poor fruit set after flowering, may have caused Carmenère to fall out of favor.

in the appellation as a whole, however, may mean in some vintages the majority of the harvest can be lost. Merlot flowers earlier than the two Cabernets and thus it is more vulnerable to spring frosts and reduced or irregular flowering and fruit set.

Others include the "Mendoza" and #6 for heavy fruit set. Clone #15, a shyer bearer than #6, has produced highly rated wines in most regions.
