Hectare
A hectare is the metric unit for measuring land area. One hectare is 10,000 square meters or 2.471 acres.

The most commonly used measurement of area in viticulture, the hectare is 10 000 m2, approximately equivalent to 2.5 acres. Yields may be expressed in hectolitres per hectare.

As of 2000 there were 70,000 acres (28,300 hectares) of Barbera planted, making it the third most widely planted red grape variety in Italy.

The best Sauternes always come from vineyards with low yields per hectare and harvested by hand.

Yields can range from 3 to over 40 tonnes per hectare. What is an appropriate yield, depends on a number of factors, but the most important are the style of wine that is being aimed at, and the grape variety itself.

With extremely low yield - in Margaux the average was a mere 25 hectolitres/hectare - due to vine stress from the heat, production is well below average.

Refers to the amount of grapes harvested per acre or hectare. Low yielding vines generally produce the highest-quality and most sought-after fruit fetching the highest prices.

Cinsaut (or Cinsault) is most often used as a blending grape with other types. France has more Cinsaut planted (50,000 hectares) than Cabernet Sauvignon and there is as much Cinsaut acreage planted in its former backdoor wine colony of Algeria.

Chardonnay is versatile and is grown with success in most viticultural areas under a variety of climatic conditions. Yet it only amounts to 2 percent of the world vine areas. Total chardonnay vines cover more than 160,000 hectares (400,000 acres).
