Hungary
A country with a great wine tradition, and home to one of the world's classic wine styles, the botrytised dessert wine Tokaji, which is currently undergoing a renaissance spurred by foreign investors.

Hungary's most famous wine region lies in the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains of the far north of the country - in fact the traditional area crosses into the southeast corner of modern Slovakia.

Also known as Tokaji, the famous wine of Hungary made in a style similar to Noble Late Harvest - made from the concentrated juice of semi-dried, extremely rich, botrytis-affected grapes.

FURMINT: Widely grown grape in Hungary and eastern Europe. Recent DNA analysis (2002) suggests the variety resulted from a Heunisch Weiss/Gouais Blanc cépage cross with an unknown hungarian variety.

White grape, yet nebulous origins, the Perusini (1935) believed to have been imported from Hungary in Veneto and Friuli, but has no similarity with the grapes of that region.

Furmint probably has its origins in Hungary, though it may have been brought into Hungary in the early thirteenth century. It then made its way into the Hérault, Gard and Languedoc regions of France in the early nineteenth century.

Furmint
Mostly found in Hungary, (although small quantities are found throughout Eastern Europe), Furmint is the main grape in Tokaji one of the world's great dessert wines. Furmint is also vinified as a dry, crisp and clean white wine.

Also known as Tokaj, this sweet wine is originally produced in the Tokaj-Hegyalja region of its native Hungary. It is a sweet wine made from a variety of white grapes subjected to noble rot on the vine.

There are cabernet franc vineyards in Romania, Hungary, the Balkans, and the Friuli region of north eastern Italy (aka cabernet frank). New plantings in the 1990s in Australia, New Zealand, and Argentina show promise.

Following these three major wine producers in Europe, with great wines of their own, are Spain, Portugal, Hungary, Greece, Austria and Switzerland. Each country has their own specialty, attracting the attention of wine connoisseurs around the world.

Tokay: A botrytised dessert wines from north east Hungary. Australian wines named Tokay are fortified wines made from the Muscadelle variety.

In Europe there are, for example, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, and Georgia. In North Africa and the Middle East there are Algeria, Tunisia, and Israel.

In Germany it goes by Rulander, in France's Loire it may go by Malvoisie or Pinot Beurot, and in Alsace it is referred to as, Tokay d'Alsace. In Hungary it's Szukerbarat. No doubt there's some place on earth where it is called Potato.
