Imperiale
A large format Bordeaux bottle, equivalent to an impressive eight standard bottles. In Burgundy and Champagne this size is called a Methusaleh. See my advisory page on wine bottle sizes for more information.

Zinfandel came to the United States in 1820, when New York nurseryman George Gibbs carried back various cuttings from the Imperial Austrian plant species collection. Over the next two decades, Zinfandel became a popular table grape in the Northeast U.

In Britain, a barrel holds 36 imperial gallons (One imperial gallon equals 4.5 liters), or 1.63 hectoliters. In the United States, a barrel holds 31.5 US gallons (One US gallon = 3.8 liters), or 1.17 hectoliters.

Zinfandel first appeared in the United States in the 1820s when Long Island nursery owner George Gibbs imported several grape vines from the Imperial collection in Vienna. One of the vines was Zinfandel.

Methusaleh
A large Burgundy and Champagne bottle, equivalent to eight standard bottles. In Bordeaux this size is known as an Imperiale.
