JOHANNISBERG RIESLING
A white-wine variety widely grown along the Rhine river and tributaries, including Rheingau, Rheinhessen, Mosel, Nahe regions of Germany.

 


Johannisberg Riesling: The soft yet strong nose of peaches, apricots, lemons, and honey. Fresh and delicious young but can develop beautifully with age.

Johannisberg Riesling: (pronounced reez-ling, never ryz-ling -- they'll roll their eyes) Synonym for White Riesling, this grape is responsible for wines of the same name in California.

Ehrenfelser: Created by crossing the Johannisberg Riesling grape and a Sylvaner grape clone, Ehrenfelser is extremely frost resistant. The wine it creates tastes a great deal like Riesling wine. Ehrenfelser is grown primarily in Canada.

Because of the fame of this village, the word "Johannisberg" is sometimes (in the US only) added to the Riesling grape, Riesling being the principal grape of this region in Germany. "Johannisberg Riesling" was adopted in the US to distinguish it ...

The wine has many imposters, including Clare Riesling, Welschriesling, and Laski Riesling, grapes with no ancestral claim to the noble grape Riesling. It does have a few legitimate aliases, though, including Rhine, White, and Johannisberg Riesling.

In Australia it makes the most popular white wine and is called the Rhine Riesling. California and America pays homage to the great vineyard of Schloss Johannisberg by calling their variety Johannisberg Riesling.

Used for producing acidic dry and sweet white wines in Austria that have the label name "Riesling" which usually refers to this varietal, not the true german Johannisberg Riesling that is known by the name Rheinriesling.
