Poised on the border between Europe and Asia and arguably part of the cradle of civilization, Turkey boasts a rich and ancient history ... and a key role in the early history of wine.

 


Light: Bright light and sunlight can damage wine as it ages in bottle, so the darker the room, the better. Total darkness is easily achieved by simply closing the lid of the case or the closet door.

Lightstruck wines are those that have had excessive exposure to ultraviolet light, particularly in the range 325 to 450 nm[8].

The cellar has to be dark as light has a negative effect on wine. Use a candle or a torch in the cellar. Do not use paraffin lights as this will creat an unwanted smell of fuel.

Lighter than Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc usually has a grassy citrus aroma. Flavors range from apple, pear, green tea, limes and freshly mowed grass. You can often detect a little smokiness. California Sauvignon Blancs sometimes have a melon flavor.

Lightest in color - pale straw. Nose is toasty, with mild apple and pear. On the palate it has good mousse, very ethereal - light, mild flavor of citrus, apple and a touch of mineral. Acidity is low at first, becoming more pronounced in the finish.

With a light fruity character, this is the main component of Vouvray, and is grown in California, South Africa (it's called Steen there) and the Loire Valley in France.

MENCÍA: Light red wine variety widely grown in Galicia, N.W Spain. Has the synonym names Negra and Loureiro Tinto. Some insist the variety is a clone of Cabernet Franc. (No other details as yet).

Kabinett: In theory this is the lightest prädikatswein. As indicated above, however, in ripe years this category may well be produced from grapes that are easily of Spätlese quality.

These wines are usually light, have little alcohol and are dry. Kabinett wines are usually consumed during meals
Spätlese - (literally late harvest) wines produced with late harvests and are usually more intense and structured than Kabinett.
