Loire Valley
The Loire Valley (Vallée de la Loire) is home to more than 300 châteaux.

Loire Valley: One of France's larger wine regions located along the Loire River in west-central France. Major districts within the Loire are: Anjou, Muscadet and Touraine.

Loire Valley wines made from Sauvignon Blanc, such as Pouilly Fumé and Sancerre, are most often 100% Sauvignon Blanc, unblended and usually made without the use of oak.

The Loire Valley is one of the major wine producing regions of France. Most of the wines tend to be light and enjoyed young. A notable exception is my favorite sweet wine, Coteaux du Layon which ages for decades.

In the Loire Valley, Sauvignon Blanc makes wines known as Pouilly Fumé and Sancerre, named after their respective towns and usually made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc and unoaked.

Sauvignon Blanc is a major variety in the Bordeaux region of France and in the Sancerre and Pouilly regions in the eastern Loire Valley of France.

In France Cabernet Franc is to be found in the Loire Valley, especially in the areas round Chinon and Bourgueil, in the Bordeaux area especially on the right bank of the Gironde round St. Emilion and Pomerol.

It is the most famous white wine made in the Loire Valley of France. The grape is known for its high acidity and can be fermented dry or medium-sweet. The finest French Chenin Blancs can age for many years.

With a light fruity character, this is the main component of Vouvray, and is grown in California, South Africa (it's called Steen there) and the Loire Valley in France.

The one noteworthy exception to this is the Loire Valley of France where cabernet franc alone makes the well known wines Chinon and Bourgeuil. Cabernet franc often has a unique violet aroma and a slightly spicy flavor.

Flinty
Dry, mineral character that comes from certain soils, mostly limestone, in which the wine was grown; typical of French Chablis and Loire Valley Sauvignon Blancs (Sancerre).
