The main red berried grape of Rioja is Tempranillo, which together with Garnacha, Graciano and Mazuelo make the blend for red wines of the region.

CARIGNAN: (aka Carinena and Mazuelo in Spain, Gragnano in Italy, Carignane in California). Semi-classic grape commonly used for making red wines in Southern France and Spain.

In Rioja, Tempranillo is often blended with Garnacha, Mazuelo and a few other minor grapes. When made in a traditional style, Tempranillo can be garnet-hued, with flavors of tea, brown sugar and vanilla.

CARIGNAN: Has the synonym names Cariñena (ie: Carinyena), Mazuela or Mazuelo in Spain, Gragnano in Italy, Carignane (or occasionally) Kerrigan in California. Normally ripens in late season around the end of September.

In Spanish it is known as Cariñena with Mazuelo, Tinto Mazuelo, Crujillon and Samsó also being used in Spain. In California it is spelled with an extra vowel on the end as Carignane. In Catalan the grape is known as Carinyena.

Tempranillo is the main red grape of Rioja, where it typically is blended with graciano and mazuelo.

Tempranillo is the primary grape used, followed by Garnacha (also known as Grenache), Graciano and Mazuelo. The latter two are excellent but difficult to grow varieties.

Capable of making juicy young reds as well as serious, well-structured, fine, oak-aged reds with vanilla, tobacco spice and strawberry flavours, usually blended with Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano, but sometimes made on its own.
