A handsomely sized commune amounting to more than 430 hectares, to the north and north-west Meursault borders (running from east to west) Volnay, Monthélie and Auxey-Duresses, and to the south lies Puligny-Montrachet.

Meursault (muhr-so)
A popular wine producing village of Burgundy, France. Located in the Cote de Beaune, it produces primarily white wine from the Chardonnay grape. A small amount of red wine is produced from Pinot Noir.

Meursault is in general better than Puligny-Montrachet, and Puligny is better than Chassagne-Montrachet. The average yields explain all: as usual, Meursault produced least, Chassagne the most. This is a patchy vintage for Corton-Charlemagne.

Meursault ("Murr-so") is one of the relatively few Burgundy villages that produces almost entirely white wine (which, you'll recall, in Burgundy normally means Chardonnay).

In Burgundy , it is used for the exquisite whites, such as Montrachet, Meursault and Pouilly-Fuissè, and true Chablis; in Champagne it turns into Blanc de Blancs.

Meursault, Santenay or Gevrey-Chambertin), premier cru and grand cru. But it is not as simple as this: because of French inheritance laws, vineyards are commonly divided into small plots, each worked by a different grower.

In the Meursault region, the premier cru vineyards planted at Meursault-Charmes have topsoil almost 78 inches (2.0 m) above limestone and the resulting wines are very rich and rounded.

They had such great vineyards and outstanding producers as Meursault Charmes from Domaine Comtes Lafon and Meursault Perrières from Domaine Coche-Dury.

In the Meursault appellation, chardonnay takes on a lush, ripe, "fleshy", "buttery" quality. Even in quality sparkling wines and French Champagne, it is the major varietal used.

Ted Lemon, the proprietor and winemaker, received his training in Burgundy, France, and can still say to this day he was the only American winemaker to ever be named head winemaker of a Burgundy house--Domaine Guy Roulot in Meursault.

Specific, descriptive aroma and flavor description, classic in Meursault but often present in other White Burgundies and more rarely in Chardonnays from other regions.

Nuts: Fino and Amontillado Sherries and vins jaunes of the Jura area of France are intentionally oxidized wines; this will give them a nutty overtone. Some oak-aged Cõte d'Or Chardonnays (Meursaults) display various nut-like over-tones.
